Chuck Svenson was a citizen of the Moon — and proud of it! To him, Earth, with its heavy atmosphere, even though it was the "mother" planet, was not the best place in the universe to live. As he rocketed back home from a blast off at a point high in the Andes, he anxiously looked forward to the reception he'd receive at Moon City. For he was the only citizen from Earth's satellite to be selected by the United Nations’ interplanetary commission as a crew member for the first ship to attempt a flight from the Moon to Mars.

How Chuck learned that his orders had been changed, that he was to be replaced by an earthling, started a chain of dramatic and thrilling events that ended in the weird and torturous catacombs of Mars. For the spunky teen-ager would not be cheated of the universe's greatest adventure! When the Mars-bound ship rose, on a pillar of flame above the desolate lunar landscape, it carried a stowaway in its hold. What Chuck's extra weight meant to the carefully figured fuel supply, the ship's crash landing on a "lifeless" planet, the disappearance of vitally needed tools from the vicinity of the stricken ship—fill these pages with suspense and mystery.

A story of bizarre adventure, MAROONED ON MARS is also the tense personal drama of a young man who shoulders the responsibility for stranding his shipmates. In a breath-taking climax, near the ruins of a long-lost civilization that suddenly comes alive with rodent-like Martians, Chuck proves the courage and bravery of one young “citizen of the Moon!"

I read this several decades ago. Picked it up just for fun. It was fun but extremely dated. Nice read if you like "antique sci-fi."

Marooned on Mars Winston Science Fiction Book 5 edition by Lester del Rey Children eBooks Reviews

Many of us who came to science fiction in the 1950s credit our introduction to the genre to the Winston series. Winston recruited a stable of well-established SF authors, including such icons as Arthur C. Clarke, Ben Bova, Lester del Rey, and Poul Anderson, to write a series of books for the 13-17 age group. Marooned on Mars is one of several Winston SF books by Lester del Rey (who also wrote under the names Philip Saint John and Erik Van Lhin) that have recently become available as e-Books. Del Rey was unquestionably one of the best writers who contributed to the Winston series. He was also the most prolific, writing nine of the novels, plus the one nonfiction book (Rockets Through Space), in the series.

Marooned on Mars is a neat little account of the first voyage to The Red Planet and first contact with alien entities. (That’s not a spoiler. The astronauts discover almost as soon as they land that they’re not alone.) The plot is relatively simple Who or what are these Martians? Are they intelligent beings or just curious animals, and how the heck do they manage to keep sneaking up on us all the time?! As is typical of most del Rey novels the characters are well developed and quite believable. The story moves at a fast pace.

Del Rey’s Mars is fairly consistent with the planet NASA has revealed to us since the book was initially published in 1952. Maybe there’s a little more sand and quite a bit more air than Opportunity, Spirit, and Curiosity have found, but it’s not hard to see the world of Marooned on Mars as the planet that’s actually out there. For all we know the Martians as del Rey envisioned them may even be there!

This isn’t del Rey’s best contribution to the Winston series, but it’s still a good read for those of us who initially enjoyed it 60 years ago.
Marooned on Mars (1952) is first SF novel in the author's Juveniles series. It takes place twenty-five years after the first landing on the Mood.

In this novel, Charles Svensen is not quite eighteen. Chuck is a resident of the Moon.

William Svensen is Chuck's father. He is a construction engineer.

Jeff Foldingchair is a full-blooded Cherokee Indian. He has been flying rockets to the Moon for decades.

Richard Steele is the engineer on the Eros. Dick

Braithwaite is the Governor of the Moon Colony. Appointed by the UN, he is very popular with the colonists.

Lewis Wong is an American of Chinese ancestry. Lew is the alternative for Chuck.

In this story, Chuck is going home to the Moon. Chuck is flying to the rocket field in the Andean Mountains. The special rocket from the Moon is being loaded.

Chuck goes into the dining hall to find Jeff. He is drinking coffee when Chuck appears. Then he is called out for a radargram. He tells Chuck that meteorites have been detected in space and the Eros takeoff has been moved up two days. He tells the boy that his ship will lift in ten minutes.

The little atomic rocket takes off and accelerates at four gees. After passing a space station, Jeff and Chuck fall asleep. A few hours later, the rocket lands on the Moon.

Chuck's father enters the ship after landing. William welcomes Chuck home with a big grin. Then Chuck tells him the he had passed and was going to Mars.

The smile slips from Svensen's face. He looks at Jeff and the pilot says that he couldn't tell him. The Eros is leaving the Moon one day prior to Chuck's eighteenth birthday. The UN Charter won't allow him to go to Mars.

Dick and the rest of the crew are certain that Chuck will be going to Mars. Braithwaite has requested an exception to the law so he can go. Then Jeff lands on the Moon with Chuck's replacement.

Chuck likes Lew, but still hopes to go to Mars on the Eros. Then the Chinese delegate in the UN refuses to vote for the exception. Chuck will not be allowed to go.

Lew goes to the Medical Section complaining of pain. He says that it is his appendix. Chuck doesn't believe his story.

The UN Council offers Chuck a scholarship and advisor job. He would be down of Earth for six years. Chuck tries to refused the scholarship, but the UN has retracted his permit to be on the Moon.

This tale leave Chuck no other choice. He will stow away on the Eros and go to Mars despite the UN Council. They are all flatlanders who don't know how important space is to him.

Unfortunately, Chuck doesn't think about the logistics of having another person on board. The next installment in this sequence is Rocket Jockey.

Obviously the author has not set these juveniles in chronological order. However, stowing away seems to fascinate him. He uses the same notion in the later novel Mission to the Moon

Highly recommended for Del Rey fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of space voyages, alien creatures, and a lot of adventure. Read and enjoy!

This book came in good shape from the supplier. I got this as a present for my dad for Christmas; it was the first book that turned him on to science fiction, and he wanted a copy of it. Thank you!
Great adolescent sci-fi classic. Obviously much of the science is dated and inaccurate, but it is still a fun read. I read it at about age 12 and loved it. Re-read it for nostalgia's sake and enjoyed it again.
Bought it for nostalgia reasons Read a lot of Winston sf novels as a kid
It was ok
If the Tom Corbett series had been just a little bit better written, this would have fit well inside that series.
